Overview
Join us on Saturday, November 8, when Reem Fadda, Associate Curator, Middle Eastern Art, Guggenheim, Abu Dhabi Project speaks with GCC Artists Khalid Al Gharaballi, Aziz Al Qatami Barrak Alzaid and Amal Khalaf. The conversation will focus on unpacking the dense cultural tropes that the GCC collective references in their projects, both intellectually and formally. What ideas and concerns join these artists together? What urgencies are GCC responding to? How do they respond to context?
This artist collective enacts a multidisciplinary and communal way of art making, where design and performance is hyper-hyphenated. How does a collective of eight members operate? How do they reach consensus? How are these operational measures reflected in the political coalition they wish to mimic? Ultimately, we will explore how GCC takes on existing perceptions we think we know and recontextualises them so that the borders of criticality, humour and mimicry are transformed by their reiterations.
A tour of the exhibition will begin at 6 pm, prior to the talk.
