Residents Eunice Sanchez and Saiful Razman. Sharjah Art Foundation, 2022

Overview

During their month-long residency in Sharjah, Eunice Sanchez and Saiful Razman, both from Southeast Asia, will develop works that explore an ASEAN identity and deepen a mutual understanding across diverse global cultures within the emirate. The artists were selected for Sharjah Art Foundation’s ASEAN Artists Residency Programme in partnership with ASEAN and Maybank Foundation.

Launched in early November last year, the residency open call received more than 60 applications from young emerging artists based in 10 Southeast Asian nations. The selection panel, which included Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, shortlisted the two artists based on the strength of their proposals and the potential of the residency to support the growth of their careers.

Sanchez and Razman will undertake cultural exchanges in Sharjah to develop their practice outside of their region. They will use the rooftop, courtyard and rooms of the heritage house Bait Obaid Al Shamsi in Arts Square as studio spaces for the development and production of their proposed works.

The residency emphasises cultural exchange by encouraging the residents to experience and develop their practices out of their communities by engaging with Sharjah’s local community through several site visits and workshops.

The works proposed by the residents investigate and study archival and historical narratives, themes of preservation and perception through photography and alternative processes alongside an exploration of impermanence, shelter and migration through installation.

As part of the residency, Sanchez and Razman will also conduct workshops to engage with the local community.
