Overview

An ongoing work emerging from the ‘Remain Calm’ series, Remain Calm I هدوء غامر by artist Nile Koetting is inspired by the evacuation drills held in Japan—where Koetting was born and raised—as preparation for the threat of natural disasters as well as the security protocol of art institutions. Remain Calm I هدوء غامر explores the nature of protected zones that exist between high-security technologies, risk-hedging measures, communal spaces and digitised care. The performance offers practical perspectives on the role museums and art centres can play in times of crisis. Speculative scenography is evoked by sensory elements such as fog, light and stylised moving images like those seen on airport information display boards.

Remain Calm I هدوء غامر is an invitation into a space in-between, a space of heightened awareness of all senses. A space for rituals and reflections, to explore singularity and communality in at once hyper-secured and insecure times and spaces.

Remain Calm I هدوء غامر was first performed at Kunstverein Göttingen, Germany, in March 2019 and later in different iterations at Palais de Tokyo, Klosterruine Berlin and Centre Pompidou x West Bund Museum Shanghai.
