Overview

Re|sound is Sharjah Art Foundation’s biannual event for musical experimentation in dialogue with the medium of film. Locally and regionally based musicians are invited to prepare and perform live original sets in conversation with a projected film.

The fifth edition of Re|sound features Rouzbeh Rashidi's film Homo Sapiens Project: There Is No Escape from the Terrors of the Mind (2013), which will be screened in tandem with live music from drummer and percussionist Colin James Gordon, sound artist Safeya Alblooshi and experimental musician Mckie Alvarez.

This event is free and open to the public.

About the film

Homo Sapiens Project: There Is No Escape from the Terrors of the Mind (2013)
Director: Rouzbeh Rashidi
Ireland, Iran, United Kingdom, Oman
Experimental | 120 min
No dialogue

A mysterious loner, perhaps a poet, journeys through a series of uncanny surrealistic landscapes with an unclear purpose.

This experimental film, an adventure divided into three sections, compares the eerier qualities of different landscapes and interposes characters within them, thus elaborating on the Homo Sapiens Project’s ongoing preoccupation with extracting sinister moods from ordinary settings. In a way, the films in the project can be seen as experimental horror films, in which an atmosphere of dread is evoked and sustained without the expected narrative trappings.

There is no escape…. From one side of the globe to the other, there is no escaping the faces, the visions, the ever-watchful camera. There is no escaping the mask. There is no escaping the resonating echoes of images and sounds that cross each other over time. There is no escaping the cinema. There is no escaping the terrors of the mind.

About the artists

As a drummer, Gordon has taken part in many tours, playing all around the world. He has shared the stage with Kendrick Lamar, Bastille, Liam Payne, Sean Kuti, The Supremes and many others. As a producer, Gordon will soon be releasing a project on Universal MENA titled Free Pizza No Rules and has just released an Apple Music exclusive called Moonbound with Dubai singer Jay Abo.

Gordon studied ethnomusicology at UCLA under such jazz luminaries as Kenny Burrell, James Newton and Delbert Bump.

Using found objects, field recordings, the piano, the computer and analogue technology, she engages with topics of conceptual narrative, environmental listening and interactivity in performance.

In addition to curating a sound project for the Open Studios at NYU Abu Dhabi (2019), Alblooshi has assisted with We Are Not Alone, an audio-visual soundwalk by the Soundwalk Collective for the Louvre Abu Dhabi (2020). She has also done sound for live performance and moving image.

Alblooshi is currently completing her fourth year at New York University Abu Dhabi, studying for a Bachelor of Art in Music (expected 2021). She is working on the performance/installation Narrated liquid contaminants as her final project, for which she is investigating sounds of water contamination.
