Overview

WITHIN is Tarek Atoui’s proposition for the Sharjah Biennial 11 sound programme. Atoui conceived this programme as a sound composition of 4 interrelated movements that build up and feedback on each other, lasting for the duration of the Biennial.
WITHIN is influenced by the TACET group’s research on deaf culture and its ways of understanding and perceiving sound.

This research has inspired Atoui to write WITHIN as a chain reaction of rhythmic pulses, plucked pulses, silent and emic ones. It has also led him to look into Qin philosophy and the relations it establishes between virtuosity, silence and sound.
