Dispositions
Adania Shibli
Adania Shibli was asked by the Qattan Foundation and its partners—Welfare Association, the French Consulate in Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and the Cité Internationale des Arts—to realise a project that would celebrate 10 years of their collaboration through a 6 month residency programme dedicated to Palestinian artists. The result is a project called Dispositions, comprising a bilingual publication (Arabic and French).
Presentation Proposal
Dispositions is an art book project that explores how movement from the artist’s familiar surroundings, or position to other unfamiliar ones—a process named here as ‘dis-positioning’—contributes to forming his or her ‘dispositions,’ in other words, their predominant inclinations and processes of artistic creation. The publication explores this question, discursively and visually, by looking at the experiences and the works of 17 Palestinian artists who participated in the ‘Cité internationale des arts’ residency programme in Paris between the years 1999 and 2009.
Adania Shibli (Palestine, 1974) has published two novels and many short stories, as well as narrative and art essays which have appeared in various anthologies, art books and magazines. In 2001 and 2003 she won the Qattan Young Writer’s Award—Palestine. In 2009 Shibli gained a PhD for her thesis Visual Terror from the University of East London, London. She has also worked as a lecturer at the University of Nottingham, School of Critical Theory and Cultural Studies.
