New means of incorporating technologies into contemporary experience increasingly subvert traditional perceptions of location, presence and social relations. What impact does this have on how data is interpreted? How is connectivity understood in the context of networks rather than communities? What artistic practices are developing within this context and what forms of engagement do these practices explore and propose?
Burak Arikan is an Istanbul (Turkey) and New York (USA) based artist working with complex networks. He earned a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, Cambridge, USA. He also holds an MA in visual communication design from Bilgi University, Istanbul (2004) and a BS in Civil Engineering from Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul (2001). Arikan’s software, prints, installations, and performances have been featured in numerous exhibitions at museums and institutions internationally including, The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Venice Architecture Biennale, Italy; Berlin Biennial, Germany; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria; Sónar, Barcelona, Spain; Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), USA; Neuberger Museum of Art, Westchester County, New York; and Borusan Contemporary, DEPO, ARTER and SALT in Istanbul. He has lectured and held workshops at institutions including MIT, Rhode Island School of Design and New York University in the USA, and Istanbul Technical University, Boaziçi University, Sabancı University, and Bilgi University in Turkey. Arikan is the founder of Graph Commons platform, dedicated to providing ‘network intelligence’ for everyone.
Bill Balaskas (b. 1983, Greece) is a London-based interdisciplinary artist who studied economics before enrolling in the Royal College of Art, London, where he is currently a doctoral candidate. He is an editor for one of the most renowned academic journals in the field of New Media Art, the Leonardo Electronic Almanac (The MIT Press, London). His work has been widely exhibited internationally, in the context of more than 70 solo and group exhibitions. He has recently given public talks at Tate Liverpool, UK; the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, Germany; Sabancı University, Istanbul, Turkey; the Thessaloniki Biennale, Greece; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Last year, he represented the UK in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and in Maribor, Slovenia, the European Capital of Culture for 2012. In April 2012, the Global Board of Contemporary Art pronounced him one of the four most important emerging artists around the world (ALICE Awards). He is currently a nominee for the 2013 AUDI Art Award of Art Cologne for the most innovative young artist.
