Manal Ataya, Mohammed Kazem, Khulood Al Atiyat, Thaier Helal and Ismail Al Rifai at March Meeting 2016: Education, Engagement, and Participation.
March Meeting began as a convening for contemporary art practitioners and professionals working in (and beyond) the region. Now, as part of the 9th iteration, this panel looks at how art infrastructure in the UAE has developed over recent years. There has been much discussion around the construction of new art and cultural institutions and audiences. This panel extends this dialogue to the development of art education and opportunities for early career artists, curators and writers. What kind of exposure to art do students receive in primary and secondary education? What are the needs of art education in the UAE, and how can schools and institutions address those needs? What kinds of resources – material and immaterial, formal and informal – are lacking for emergent artists and art professionals? And finally, how and where might early practitioners come together to initiate informal discussion and projects with and for one another?
