Sharjah Biennial 13 works as a constellation, formed out of a series of discussions between four interlocutors, rooted in their respective local context. In collaboration with an institution of their choice, each of the interlocutors has worked with a group of researchers to address one of the four SB13 keywords (water, earth, crops and culinary) through a programme of events, talks and performances. The four off-site projects are taking place throughout 2017. In this conversation, SB13 curator Christine Tohme opens up the interlocutors’ year-long conversation to the public, attempting to encapsulate the ideas, jests, hopes and concerns, both existing and new, through which SB13 was conceived. Simultaneously, she brings together the people who forged the Biennial into a specific temporal and spatial format.
