Overview

Sara Rahbar employs multiple media, including photography, sculpture and installation, to create autobiographical works that stem from her personal experiences. Using the flag as a recurrent motif throughout her work, she explores ideas of nationalism, ideology and belonging. In works such as the series 'Flags', 2005–11, in which traditional fabrics are reworked to create textile collages of American and Iranian flags, Rahbar considers the ways in which a symbol of patriotism and independence can simultaneously represent ideological and nationalistic violence. Referencing both the historical avant-garde and left-wing democratic movements as forms of resistance against the logic of contemporary capitalism, her work aims to challenge the binaries of 'self' and 'other', 'cannibal' and 'civilised'.
