Overview

Enrique Ramírez introduces 11 de Septiembre [11 September] (2002) by Claudia Aravena Abughosh:
‘Claudia's work has always been a reference point for me, as much as 11 September has always been a reference for all of us worldwide. However, 11 de Septiembre is for us, above all the Chilean coup d'état. Claudia makes a parallel that impressed me with its honesty and simplicity—that image has always remained in my mind.’

About the film:
11 de Septiembre [11September] relates two extreme events: the terrorist attacks in New York on 11 September 2001, and the Chilean military coup led by General Pinochet that overthrew President Salvador Allende on 11 September 1973. The video brings these two events, 28 years apart, together by the ‘fracturing of past and present memories.’ The video explores the transcendence of memory and carries an implicit criticism of mass media’s representation of violence. The video speaks from the tense fissure between the present memory and the historical past.
This film received the Festival Award, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany (2002).
