Written by Duncan Macmillan in 2013, Every Brilliant Thing has quickly become one of the most successful theatrical texts of the past decade. The play has been performed at numerous stages in the UK and internationally. Translated into Arabic, adapted and directed by Ahmed El Attar, the play delves into a daughter’s struggle with her mother’s suicidal depression.
The protagonist, played by Nanda Mohamed, is alone on an empty stage, with only a minimal set, accessories and music. She has the challenging task of balancing the storyline with the energies of the audience—who are invited to participate and even improvise. Despite its emotionally charged subject, the performance has a positive, playful and hopeful tone.
