Overview

Sound plays an important role in artist Mario Santanilla’s practice. For the last couple of years, he has been building playlists that include songs, concept albums and soundtracks from film and video works. He generally listens to them in complete darkness, exploring the intricate relationship between sound and space.

In this immersive collective listening session, set in a dark space, participants will recline comfortably as they listen to an uninterrupted selection of recordings. These musical works have provided the basis for a composition Santanilla has developed with musician Daniela Sicilia for his March Project 2019 commission. Santanilla will begin the session by presenting his reflections on sound as a building material and the dark as the totality of space, not its absence. He will also be sharing information on each piece of music as well as his personal notes and reasons for some of his selections.

All Sharjah Art Foundation events are free and open to the public.
