Overview
Grant amount up to USD 30,000 + publishing support
Sharjah Art Foundation announces an open call for the second edition of the FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant, which will further the Foundation’s mission to advance scholarly research and publish content that generates a more expansive understanding of the history of art in the region and its relationship with the wider world.
The 2020 edition of the FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant will support one or more art historical research projects on global modernism that focus on artists, practices and/or theoretical content produced in the MEASA (Middle East, Africa and South Asia) region during the post-war period.
For this cycle, the Foundation invites proposals for publications in the following two categories:
• Long-form essays of approximately 7,500-12,500 words, with supporting imagery and/or archival content, that will utilise unpublished original research or new readings of historical content. The grant winning essay will be printed in a small reader format, with distribution rights held by Sharjah Art Foundation.
Languages: English and/or Arabic
Eligible applicants: individual scholars, research teams, publishing houses and public institutions
• Reproductions of critical historical texts/small publications that have been out of print for at least 10 years, which could be revised, updated and supplemented with a new academic introduction. These texts should have been published from the 1940s to the 1960s or engage with content from the period even if they were published at a later date.
Languages: English and/or Arabic
Eligible applicants: research teams, publishing houses and public institutions
Grant monies should be used towards research and fee-based activities like image licensing, documentation and editing. In addition to providing funding, Sharjah Art Foundation will publish the text on its own publishing platform and offer design and printing support.
The following conditions must be met for a project to be eligible for funding:
• Applicants must already hold or agree to obtain all related rights, licenses and permissions to reproduce or reprint any relevant archival material or images.
