This panel will discuss the films You Will Die at 20 and 27th of Shaban in the context of the writers’ and directors’ experiences during the making of the films.
You Will Die at 20 brings Sudanese cinema back to life after the revolution. The film tells the story of 19-year-old Muzamil (Mustafa Shehata), who was told as an infant that he would die on the day he turned 20. The film received the Lion of the Future Award when it was screened at the Venice Film Festival (2019).
One of the first Saudi short films to be streamed on Netflix, 27th of Shaban follows Mohammed and Nouf, who go on a date, an act prohibited in the Kingdom in the early 2000s.
