Tarek Atoui: Cycles in 11 Residency Workshops

Sharjah Art Foundation would like to invite you to register for the three workshops, Lighthub Sharjah, Unravel and Intro to Sound Synthesis and Performance with Max/MSP held as part of Tarek Atoui’s Residency Programme.

Participants are invited to explore sound through instruments installed at Al Hamriyah from sound artist Tarek Atoui’s recent exhibition Cycles in 11 as well as tactilely experiment with divers’ sound devices and objects alongside their acoustic properties within the space. Leading from the exhibition, the workshop focuses on experimental and innovative musical forms and offers the audience an opportunity to learn about and explore instrument-making, compositional structure, and musical collaboration.

Intro to Sound Synthesis and Performance with Max/MSP

This beginner to intermediate level workshop will introduce students to the fundamentals of working with real-time audio in Max/MSP. The course will cover an introduction to sound programming practices, understanding of how Max/MSP work and the beginning of an electro-acoustic live performance setup using Max.

Max is a visually oriented programming environment for audio and multimedia production. It allows you to create your own software using a visual toolkit of objects and connect them with virtual patch cords. The basic environment that includes MIDI, control, user interface and timing objects is called ‘Max’. However, the audio processing tools comprise the companion software, MSP.

Participants are also invited to intervene during the performance on 30 November at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi.

Lighthub Sharjah
A Light-Sound Walk and Presentation
Date: 13-14 December
Time: 8:00—10:00 pm, presented the next day at 4:00-4:30 pm

The purpose of this workshop is to investigate the relationship between technogenic light streams and our auditory perception of them, and to perform a cartographic sound piece that would create a three-dimensional light portrait of the selected areas in unique sound pieces, allowing us to directly hear how the urban environment is changing under the assault of new technologies.

During the light- and sound-walk part of the workshop, the participants will move freely and investigate the sounds of the city light streams (streetlights, headlights, city lights, etc) using Shershenkov’s special converters. During the second part of the walk, which is the performance of the ‘Lighthub Sharjah’ cartographic piece, participants will move along pre-determined routes and record the modulations of the artificial light.

The ‘Lighthub Sharjah’ piece will be presented the next day in the form of a multi-channel acousmatic composition, where the participants can hear the light-sound portrait/map of the city that they recorded during the walk.

Requirements: Each participant must have any sound recording equipment with the ability to connect lavalier microphones (for example: smartphone or audio recorder with a 3.5 mm jack input) and a pair of wired headphones (with a 3.5 mm jack input).

This event is free and open to the public, but prior registration is encouraged as places are limited.
