Overview
Vantage Point Sharjah 8 (VPS8), the eighth iteration of Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual photography initiative, aims to foster the development and creativity of photographers and encourage their engagement with the wider cultural community.
A large number of applicants from different professional backgrounds, with a variety of skill sets and interests, respond to the open call each year. Both local and international photographers are invited to submit photographs, and applicants are free to choose their own theme and artistic approach. This year’s edition, which attracted 290 applicants, presents the work of 39 photographers from more than 20 countries.
The exhibition features a significant selection of unique photographs that tell important stories of personal experience and community life. Adopting a variety of approaches, such as collages, analogue photography and digital manipulation, the participating photographers have reflected on scenes of the human condition, captured landscapes and nature, and imagined futuristic scenarios.
The Foundation announced its first open call for submissions during the summer of 2013, inviting GCC-based photographers to submit works that fell under the theme of ‘Life and Landscapes of Sharjah’. Other Vantage Point Sharjah themes have been ‘Self-Portraiture’, ‘Performance’ and ‘Architecture and Urban Landscape’.
