Overview
The exhibition We Began by Measuring Distance opened on 29 May 2018 at Geneva’s Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO), one of Switzerland’s largest modern and contemporary art museums.
Curated by Sharjah Art Foundation director Hoor Al Qasimi, the exhibition includes a selection of works from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection by artists Basma Al Sharif, Bouchra Khalili, Taus Makhacheva, Nikla Oblak and Primož Novak, Melik Ohanian, Marwan Rechmaoui and Hassan Sharif.
“We Began by Measuring Distance spotlights eight notable contemporary artists whose practices span genres, generations and geographic borders,” said Al Qasimi. “It has been a pleasure working with MAMCO to bring the extraordinary works of such artists as Hassan Sharif, Marwan Rechmaoui and Basma Al Sharif to Switzerland for the first time.”
We Began by Measuring Distance conceives of space by turns as a landscape to be journeyed through, and as a performative territory. As such, it explores the relationship of narrative to History, and of documentation to politics.
We Began by Measuring Distance was eponymously titled after a work by Basma Al Sharif included in the exhibition, which was supported by Sharjah Art Foundation and will be on view at MAMCO through Sunday, 9 September 2018.
Concurrently on view at MAMCO is Rasheed Araeen, A Retrospective, which includes works by the artist on loan from Sharjah Art Foundation. The works are also part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s collection.
