About SAF Studio Spaces
In 2014, SAF established its first artist studio spaces at the Collections Building in Sharjah Arts Square to support the work of artists and art practitioners. The building includes eight studios for rent in three different sizes as well as a large space for education workshops.
In March 2017, SAF inaugurated a new off-site venue in Al Hamriyah, which allows the Foundation to expand and diversify its programming outside the central exhibition and studio spaces in Arts Square and Al Mureijah Square. A multi-purpose facility, Al Hamriyah Studios was used as an exhibition space for Sharjah Biennial 13 and often hosts educational workshops and a film club.
The artist studios, which boast beautiful views of the beach and sea, were constructed on the site of a former souk. Conversing with the site’s history and prior use as an introverted market space, the Emirati architect Khaled Al Najjar of the award-winning local firm dxb.lab maintained and transformed the footprint of the courtyard and periphery into an open, more fluid space. They have been designed to allow for a communal, social and spatial experience around contemporary art.
Since opening, SAF has welcomed over ten artists to work and produce in the studios including Dr Najjat Makki, Walid Al Wawi, Ismail Al Rifaie, Nasir Nasrallah, Ammar Al Attar and Abdulrahman Al Muaini.
