Sharjah Art Foundation is looking for singers at all levels (amateurs and professionals) to participate in singer and composer Neo Muyanga’s workshop and performance project titled Naham – Songs of light and weight. The workshop will be held Sunday to Saturday, 11–17 March 2018, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm each evening at the Collections Building, Arts Square. The performance will take place on Sunday, 18 March at 7:00 pm in Courtyard C, Al Mureijah Square.
The Arabic word naham refers to a song leader on a pearling ship, whose role is to uplift spirits and provide comfort as the divers trawl the sea in search of pearls. Drawing on the naham’s songs and the pearl divers’ stories of toil and struggle, Muyanga’s workshop and performance project will provide a platform for hidden voices to openly express their stories of hope, fear and longing through movement and song. The workshop’s multilingual approach is designed to promote the use of any and all languages participants choose to voice.
Singers interested in taking part in this March Meeting 2018 project should send an email to community@sharjahart.org by 1st March 2018. As this project requires teamwork and a committed group effort, please note that singers are expected to be present for all workshop sessions and the performance.
