In addition to our year-round open calls and grants, which support emerging and established artists working in contemporary art, below is a compiled list of reputable local, regional and international open calls, opportunities and residencies for artists and art practitioners. In keeping with Sharjah Art Foundation’s commitment to supporting the community, this reference tool, updated on a regular basis, includes grants, exhibitions and educational opportunities.

Opportunities for artists, curators, musicians, filmmakers, writers and academics

Homebound Residency: Digital Communities 2023
Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi
Deadline: 7 January 2023

Warehouse421’s Homebound residency programme aims to support creative practitioners in the region in producing new work and exploring community engagement in their practices while working remotely. The six-month online programme will offer residents curatorial support as well as a production budget up to 20,000 AED.

This residency will challenge creative practitioners to think deeply about connection, communication and multidimensional interaction with each other and their communities as well as the various ways in which we reside in urban spaces and the digital realm.

For its third edition, titled Digital Communities 2023, taking place from April to September 2023 the residency will be led by guest curator Sara bin Safwan. Selected participants will identify interlocutors that can help guide them through the residency process along with the guest curator.

The Warehouse421 Homebound residency programme is open to all creative practitioners in the West Asia, North Africa and South Asia region.

Parenting Artist Residency
Cow House Studios, Wexford

The Parenting Artist Residency makes it possible for awarded artists to dedicate time to their work by offering all of the support necessary to do so.

Applications are open to all parenting artists; both Irish and international cultural practitioners working in any discipline.

The Parenting Artist Residency is designed specifically for parenting artists with dependants under 18 years of age; children and partners are welcome. This residency will make it possible for participating artists to develop new work, progress existing projects, or get back to their practice after taking time out to have children. This residency will offer childcare, a stipend of €500, accommodation, and meals.

Selected artists and their families will come to Rathnure and reside at Cow House Studios from the 3rd to the 16th of April 2023.

Art-Time Residencies: Performance

Mophradat, Brussels
Deadline: 10 January 2023

Mophradat has partnered with Kunstencentrum BUDA in Belgium to offer two opportunities to performing artists from the Arab world.

• A one-week residency in BUDA for an artist in a research phase to continue developing their project using BUDA’s facilities.

Mophradat will support the selected applicant (working with maximum two collaborators, i.e. up to three individuals in total) and will cover their travel, visa costs, and per diem. BUDA will cover accommodation and meals.

• A three-week residency for artists in the last phase of their project to use BUDA’s facilities to finalise their piece. The new work will be performed during the 2023 edition of NEXT Festival, which takes place in Kortrijk and Tournai in Belgium, and Lille and Valenciennes in France.

The selected applicant will have their travel and visa costs, per diem and honoraria covered, in addition to receiving a contribution to their project’s production costs as well as a presentation fee for the performance at NEXT Festival.

Open Call: Writing Sabbaticals
Mophradat, Brussels

Mophradat is supporting emerging creative writers from the Arab world working in contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Published writers currently working on a new text for publication and who need time to focus on its completion can apply to this program. Each participant will receive a stipend to allow them to take time out from their daily preoccupations and complete their project.

The participant would receive an amount that ranges from US$600 to US$1,300 per month determined based on living costs in the writer’s country of residence, and covers a period from one month up to three months depending on the writer’s need. Applicants must have a publisher interested in their upcoming work (online or print. Independent publishers, periodicals, and other literary or cultural journals qualify). At the end of the sabbatical period, they will connect with an advisor from the selection committee for a feedback session.

2023 Curatorial Research Fellowships
Independent Curators International, New York

Conceived to foster independent research, ICI’s Curatorial Research Fellowships offer a framework tailored to each curator’s field of critical inquiry. The fellows will receive mentorship specific to their research interests, as well as $10,000 in financial support. They will have access to ICI’s international networks of collaborators and programs to create opportunities for continued learning. Fellows may be based anywhere as mentorship sessions will be held virtually. The fellowship period is eight months, between March and October 2023.

ICI’s Curatorial Research Fellowships program was expanded in 2021 with the support of the Marian Goodman Gallery Initiative in honor of the late Okwui Enwezor, to include opportunities for curators of African descent based anywhere in the world and BIPOC curators based in the U.S. Additionally, ICI offers fellowships supporting curatorial research with a focus on the Mississippi River Basin as a site of cultural production.

The Christo and Jeanne Claude Award
New York University Abu Dhabi

Under the Patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award, presented by New York University Abu Dhabi in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), has been established to nurture artistic talent in the United Arab Emirates. It is an annual award produced in collaboration with The NYUAD Art Gallery.

The award is given for the proposal and creation of an artwork that, in the spirit of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work, can be publicly exhibited and enjoyed.

Applicants are invited to propose work in any form: photography, film, land art, sculpture, painting, illustration or multi-media. Work can be shown inside or outside.

The winning work will be exhibited in Abu Dhabi in November 2023. The winning artist will directly receive 10,000 USD to enable the production of the new work.

Warehouse421 Internship & Mentorship Program 2023
Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi

The Warehouse421 Internship and Mentorship Program offers early career development support and professional preparation opportunities for emerging-creative professionals from diverse backgrounds.

The program takes place on-site, and offers participants the opportunity to be immersed in a cultural center's operations across various departments. Depending on the selected area of focus as well as Warehouse421’s needs, interns would work with the Head of Warehouse421, Programs Manager, Education Manager, Exhibitions Manager, Communications Manager, or Operations Manager.

The internship runs from January to June 2023 and from July to December 2023. Three applicants will be accepted every six months. This is a paid opportunity.
