Biography
Adel Abdessemed is a conceptual artist who creates sculptures, drawings, films, performances and installations that engage with and confront global political and social issues.
Abdessemed’s solo exhibitions include Jalousies: Complicités avec Jean Nouvel, Musée de Vence, France (2015); Palace, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2015); L’âge d’or, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar (2013); Je suis innocent, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2012) and Situation and Practice, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, USA (2008). His works have also been shown in group exhibitions such as do it بالعربي, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2016); Picasso. Mania, Grand Palais, Paris (2015) and the 56th, 52nd and 50th Venice Biennales (2015, 2007, 2003).
His works are in collections in the Musée d’art moderne, Paris; Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; François Pinault Foundation, Venice and Yuz Foundation, Shanghai.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Batna and Algiers (1987-1994) and the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France (1994-1998). He was selected as one of the National and International Studio Program Artists, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2000-2001) and was also a resident artist at the Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris (1999-2000).
Born in Constantine, Algeria in 1971, Abdessemed is currently based in London.
