Biography
Encompassing painting, video, installation, sculpture and photography, Jawad Al Malhi’s practice explores communities and their relationship to their environments. His most recent works are based on close observation of the dynamics of crowds in public space, with particular focus on the moments after events and time of waiting, which contours body gestures and group formations. He often probes the relationship between still and moving image using different mediums to bring forth numerous viewpoints.
Since 2000, he has worked on various education projects in Jerusalem and West Bank and in Europe, with children, youth and teachers.
His work has been shown at a number of solo exhibitions, including Is There a Place for Me Here?/Is There Any Room at the Inn?, Walled Off Hotel (2017); House No. 197, ERG, Brussels (2017); and Measures of Uncertainty, Al Mamal Art Foundation, Jerusalem (2014).
Selected group exhibitions include Global Resistance, Pompidou Centre, Paris (2020); Climbing The Tide, Kamal Lazzar Foundation, Tunis (2019); Intimate Terrains, Palestinian Museum (2019); Art Dubai (2016); Helenski Photography Bienele (2014); dOCUMENTA 13 (2012); Ground Floor America, Den Frie, Copenhagen (2010); Palestinian pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2009); Provisions for the Future, Sharjah Biennal 9; No Man’s Land?, Gemak, The Hague (2008); and In the Middle of the Middle, Sfeir-Semier Gallery, Beirut (2008).
Al Malhi was shortlisted for the 2010 Prix Pictet and the 2009 Frieze Foundation Cartier Award. He has participated in residencies at the Cité International des Arts, Paris (1995); Radius Residency for Research Based Art in Eckernforde, Germany (2008); Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2011) and IASPIS, Stockholm, (2017).
His works can be found in several private and public collections, including the British Museum; Imperial War Museum, London; Pompidou Centre, Paris; Kamal Lazzar Foundation, Tunis; and Barjeel Art Foundation, the UAE.
He received an MFA from the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, UK (2007).
Born in 1969, Al Malhi lives and works in East Jerusalem.
