Biography
Monira Al Qadiri is a visual artist whose work explores unconventional gender identities, petro-cultures and their possible futures as well as the legacies of corruption.
Al Qadiri’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2022); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2020); Kunstverein Göttingen, Germany (2019); Museum, Beirut (2017); Gasworks, London (2017); Stroom Den Haag, The Hague (2017); Acud Macht Neu, Berlin (2017); Athr Gallery, Jeddah (2017); Sultan Gallery, Kuwait (2014) and Tokyo Wonder Site, Japan (2009), among others. Her work has also been shown in group exhibitions, including Venice Biennale (2022); Contemporary Art Biennial, Riyadh (2022); Asia Art Biennial, Taiwan (2021); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany (2021); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2020); Minnesota Museum of Art (2019); Athens Biennial (2018); 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, São Paulo (2017); Glasstress 2017, Palazzo Franchetti San Marco, Venice (2017); Let’s Talk about the Weather: Art & Ecology in a Time of Crisis, Sursock Museum, Beirut (2016); Invisible Threads: Technology & Its Discontents, NYU Abu Dhabi (2016); DUST, CCA Warsaw (2015); Whose Subject Am I?, Kunstverein Dusseldorf, Germany (2015) and Accented, Maraya Arts Center, Sharjah (2015) Her work can be found in the collections of Art Jameel, Dubai; CCA Warsaw and Rijksakademie, Amsterdam.
Her videos and short films have been screened at Babylon Cinema, Berlin (2019); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2018); International Film Festival Rotterdam (2018); Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt (2017); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2016); Berlinale (2014); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2014); Medrar Cairo Video Festival (2014), among others.
Al Qadiri was the curator of the retrospective exhibition Lasting Impressions: Thuraya Al Baqsami at Sharjah Art Museum (2017), and she is a founding member of the artist collective GCC.
She was the recipient of the Municipality of the City of Utrecht award and grant for art in public space (2017) and Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) visual arts grant, Beirut (2012). She has participated in residencies at RAW Material Company, Dakar (2018); Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam (2016, 2017) and Home Workspace Program, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2012).
Al Qadiri received her PhD in inter-media art from the Tokyo University of the Arts (2010).
Born in 1983 in Dakar, Al Qadiri lives and works in Berlin.
