Biography
Alia Al Shamsi is an author, poet, curator and photographer with extensive experience in numerous creative fields. Driven by passion, curiosity and knowledge, her works often reflect her positive and empowering outlook in life.
Al Shamsi’s work has been featured in the Photographic Biennale in Italy (2005). She has published the children’s books Alayah and You Are Made of Stars, and is also the creative talent behind Night and Day (2018). Her latest release is a poetry book titled The Ocean Sees Through My Soul, which was launched at Sharjah International Book Fair (2020).
She received the EDAAD Scholarship (2007), British Council Cultural Leadership International Award (2010), the first Dubai Culture Publishing Award for Alayah and was named Emirates Woman’s Artist of the Year (2011).
Collaborating with The Happy Box and the Happy Hearts initiative, as part of a CSR programme, Al Shamsi travelled to Kenya, Delhi, Marakech and Cairo. These charitable initiatives were intended to promote community-driven schools and centres for women and children and provide necessary supplies. She published a book titled Mama Africa, with the proceeds from the sales going directly to regional charities.
Her works can be found in the collection of the UAE Embassy in Washington DC and Rove Hotels.
Al Shamsi earned a Bachelor’s degree in Photography from Griffith University, Australia 2014 and a Master’s degree in Photo-Image from Durham University, United Kingdom 2018. Currently the acting cultural programming manager at Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Born in 1982 in Dubai, she currently lives and works in Abu Dhabi.
