Biography
Rita Alaoui is a visual artist whose work encompasses many genres. Utilising objects from the surrounding environment, she creates paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography as well as art installations and video performances. She has also explored connections between art and writing, publishing her first livre-objet [book-object] in 2013.
Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at Galerie Delacroix, Institut français, Tangier, Morocco (2016) and the Ultra Laboratory, Casablanca (2014), among others. Her work has also been shown in group exhibitions at such institutions as the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2016); National Library of the Netherlands, The Hague (2016); the sixth Marrakech Biennale (2016); Institut du monde arabe, Paris (2014) and Musée d’art contemporain, Rabat (2014).
In 1992, she studied at the Académie Julian (ESAG Penninghen), Paris and received her BFA in Painting from the Parsons School of Design, New York (1996). In 2013, she founded The Ultra Laboratory, an art space and artist-in-residence programme in Casablanca, and has served as its director since that time.
Born in 1972 in Rabat, Morocco, she currently lives and works in Casablanca.
