Biography
In his ironic and political approach, artist and filmmaker Halil Altındere explores political, social and cultural codes, focusing on depicting marginalisation and resistance to oppressive systems. Refusing to see the problems of the country in which he lives as exclusively local, the artist scrutinises topics such as urban transformation and gender relations in collaborative works with a series of people who have had firsthand experience with them, from street vendors to hip-hop artists to ballerinas.
Altındere’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at n.b.k., Berlin (2016); MoMA PS1, New York (2015) and Kunstpalais Erlangen, Germany (2015), among others. His work has also been featured in a number of biennials and other group exhibitions, for example, the 9th Berlin Biennale (2016), 31st Bienal de Sao Paulo (2014), 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013), documenta 12 (2012), Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009) Manifesta 10 (2002) and 4th Gwanju Biennale (2002). Since the mid-1990s, Altındere’s works have been exhibited in numerous museums, including MAXXI, Rome; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany; MAK, Vienna; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; MAMbo, Bologna; Istanbul Modern; CCBB, Rio de Janeiro; Moderna Museet, Stockholm and Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea.
Born in 1971 in Mardin, He currently lives and works in Istanbul.
