Grace Aneiza Ali

Biography

Grace Aneiza Ali’s research and teaching practice centres on curatorial activism, socially engaged art practices, and contemporary art of the Caribbean and its diaspora with a focus on her homeland Guyana. Ali is Assistant Professor and Provost Fellow in the Department of Art & Public Policy at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Ali serves as the Curator-at-Large for the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in New York.

Ali has received many fellowships, including NYU Provost Faculty Fellowship, Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Grant, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Curatorial Fellowship, Fulbright Fellowship, and the NYU Henry M. MacCracken Fellowship.

She is the founder and editorial director of OF NOTE Magazine. Her recent book, Liminal Spaces: Migration and Women of the Guyanese Diaspora (Open Book Publishers, 2020), explores the art and migration narratives of women of Guyanese heritage. She has contributed essays on contemporary art to Nueva Luz Journal, Small Axe Journal, Harvard’s Transition Magazine and Wasafiri Magazine among others.

She earned an MA in Africana Studies from New York University (2008) and a BA in English Literature (with a focus on African Diaspora Literature) from the University of Maryland, College Park (2003).
Born in 1981 in Georgetown, Guyana she currently lives and works in the United States.
