Biography

Anissa Rahadiningtyas is an art historian currently working as an Assistant Curator of Islamic aesthetics in modern and contemporary Southeast Asia at the National Gallery of Singapore. Her research interests include comparative modernisms, Indian Ocean studies, postcolonial and decolonial theories, gender and feminism, environmentalism and Islamic studies.

Her curatorial projects include Little Box, Bentara Budaya Jakarta (2012); The Butterfly Effect, Barli Museum and Maja House, Bandung (2011); Medium X, Japan Foundation, Jakarta (2010); and Scarlet, Canna Art Gallery, Jakarta (2010). She also co-curated Indonesia Art & Motoring Exhibition: Motion & Reflection, Indonesia National Gallery, Jakarta (2011); Percakapan Masa, Indonesia National Gallery, Jakarta (2010); and Ideocracy–Rethinking the Regime of Etchings, Indonesia National Gallery, Jakarta (2008).

She was a member of Danarto DKK research and artistic project (with nine other artists, researchers, and performers from Indonesia) which staged an archival exhibition and performance of the artist Danarto at the 17th Istanbul Biennale (2022).

Rahadiningtyas’ publications include Rethinking the Modern and the Islamic through Hindu Forms in Haryadi Suadi and Arahmaiani’s Works, in Performing Prowess: Essays on Localized Hindu Influences in Southeast Asian Art, edited by Wannasarn Noonsuk, California State University, Fresno (2022) and Risalah Seni Rupa Bandung (The History of Art in Bandung) (co-authored with Agung Hujatnika) in 200 Tahun Seni di Bandung (Pusbitari Press, 2011).

She is the recipient of several grants and fellowships, including the Digital Collection in Arts and Sciences Grant as well as the Summer Digital Humanities Fellowship from Cornell University (2019), and the Sage Fellowship, also from Cornell University (2017–2018).

Rahadiningtyas received her BFA in Sculpture and an MA in Art Theory from Institut Teknologi Bandung (2008 and 2012, respectively). She also earned an MA in Art History and a PhD in History of Art and Visual Studies from Cornell University (2016 and 2021, respectively).

Born in 1986 in Jakarta, she currently lives and works in Singapore.
