Biography
Steve Anker directed a highly visible and successful screening series of independent film and video at the Boston Film/Video Foundation (between 1977 and 1980), San Francisco Cinematheque (between 1982 and 2002) and, along with Co-curator Bérénice Reynaud, at the REDCAT theatre in downtown Los Angeles beginning in 2003 (currently in its tenth season).
He has curated for festivals and museums in New York City, Vienna, Toronto, London,Brussels, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and written for Film Comment and Film Quarterly, among other journals. He recently coedited the well-received anthology Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area 1945-2000 (2010) and co-curated the film and video series related to the book that was presented in Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and several other cities in North America. He will guest-curate several programmes for the 2014 Ann Arbor Film Festival.
Anker has taught at Tufts University,the Massachusetts College of Art and the San Francisco Art Institute and he has served as Dean of the CalARTS' School of Film/Video since 2002. After completing his eleventh year as Dean in June 2013, he will step down to pursue personal projects while continuing to teach.
