Biography
Historian and researcher Antariska’s work centres primarily on art collectivism and the mobility of ideas in Japanese-occupied Southeast Asia during World War II. Recently he began presenting his research in an exhibition format, using hard research sources along with softer approaches such as performance, music, theatre and audience participation.
Antariska’s work has been presented in Archival Theater: 3½ Years of Work, Jakarta Arts Council (2018); Power and Other Things: Indonesia & Art (1835–now), BOZAR, Brussels (2017–2018); The Time is Out of Joint, Sharjah Art Foundation (2016) and the ongoing Equator Conference 2022, Yogyakarta Biennale Foundation, among others. His publications include Artistic Collectivism in Indonesia during the Japanese Occupation (Kyushu University Press, 2017) and Tuan Tanah Muda: Hubungan LEKRA-Seni Rupa 1950–1965 (CAF/IVAA, 2005).
In 1999, he co-founded the KUNCI Cultural Studies Center in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A research collective focusing on critical knowledge production, research action and vernacular education, KUNCI has participated in a number of exhibitions and international forums, including Seoul Mediacity Biennale (2018); Resound, Revision, Recollection: Sensing through Colonial Archives, Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam (2017); documenta 14 (2017); Gwangju Biennale 11 (2016); Made in Commons, SMBA, Amsterdam (2013); documenta 12 (2007) and Art and Democracy, Cork Caucus, Ireland (2005).
Antariska received a Global South Fellowship (2017) and completed a residency at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore (2016). He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Gadjah Mada University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Lembaga Studi Realino, Sanata Dharma University, both in Yogyakarta.
Born in 1975 in Surbaya, Indonesia, Antariksa currently lives and works in Yogyakarta.
