Biography
Cory Arcangel employs a wide range of mediums to explore how video games and software can rapidly formulate new communities and traditions. He questions the use of gadgets and software through his drawing, performance, video, modified video games and the Internet.
Arcangel’s work has been shown in numerous international solo exhibitions, including Be the first of your friends, Espace Louis Vuitton, Munich (2015); All the Small Things, Reykjavik Art Museum, Iceland (2015); Masters, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, US (2012–2013); Pro Tools, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011) and Beat the Champ, Barbican, London (2011). Among his performances and group shows are Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today, ICA Boston (2018); Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox: 1989–2017, Kunthalle Wein, Vienna (2017); Asymmetric Response: Cory Arcangel and Olia Lialina, Art Projects Ibiza, Spain (2017); Everything at Once, The Studios, London (2017); Pop Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Montelimar, France (2017) and Electronic Superhighway (2016–1966), Whitechapel Gallery, London (2016). Arcangel’s work can be found in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC and Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich.
In 2015, Arcangel received the Filmic Oeuvre Award, Kino der Kunst, Munich, and in 2005, he was awarded the Jury Prize by the New York Underground Film Festival, New York.
He is the founder of Arcangel Surfware, Stavanger, Norway and was an adjunct faculty member at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, US (2008–2011). He received a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory, US (2000).
Born 1978 in New York, he currently lives and works between Stavanger and Brooklyn.
