Ismaïl Bahri

Biography

Ismaïl Bahri is interested in phenomenology, and his drawings, photographs and videos capture small experiments in duration, scale, visibility and resolution. Deriving inspiration from everyday interaction and behaviour, he employs what he calls a ‘capture device’ to record common gestures.

Bahri’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions such as Jeu de Paume, Paris (2017); Chapelle de la Trinité, Cléguérec, France (2015) and Alliance française, Bogota (2014). His work has also been shown at Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); Fonds d’art contemporain de la Ville de Genève, Geneva (2017); Jeu de Paume, Paris (2016); Ateliers de Rennes, Biennale d’art contemporain, La Criée, Rennes, France (2016); do it بالعربي, Sharjah Art Foundation (2016); Rencontres de Bamako, Mali (2015); Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013); Biennale Benin, Cotonou (2012); Rising Images, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2012); Video.it, Fondazione Merz, Turin, Italy (2012); Busan Video Art Festival, South Korea (2012); Musée de Carthage, Tunisia (2012); British Film Institute, London (2010); National Museum of Mali, Bamako (2009) and City Historical Museum, Osaka, Japan (2009), among others.

Bahri studied at the Tunis Institute of Fine Art (1996-2000) and received both a master’s degree (2002) and PhD (2006) in visual arts from the Sorbonne, Paris 1.

Born in Tunis in 1978, he currently works between Tunis and Paris.
