Biography

Fine Artist Xenobia Bailey’s textile interpretations explore contemporary mythology, African antiquity and the 21st century visual aesthetic of ‘Cosmic-Funk’ through the mediums of crochet, fibre and digital mixed media. Her recent work has focused on design, with particular emphasis on how a well designed material culture can enhance and support a community.

Solo exhibitions include North West African American Museum, Seattle (2012); The Brooklyn Museum, New York(2006) and Aaron Davis Hall, The City College of New York (2003). She has also participated in a number of group exhibitions including Primary Structures, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, California, USA(2012); New York Fiber in the 21st Century, Lehman College Art Gallery, New York (2011) and The Global Africa Project, Museum of Arts and Design, New York(2011).

Bailey’s work is part of permanent collections at Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, The American embassies in Djibouti and Ghana and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York.

Born in 1955 in Seattle, Bailey currently lives and works in New York City.
