Biography

With the exhibition format as his medium, Alessandro Balteo-Yazbeck’s hybrid practice incorporates the typical activities of a researcher, archivist, historian and curator. In an attempt to reveal the political strategies and motives at work in the world, his work analyses the dynamics of power and propaganda in modern history and aesthetics.

Balteo-Yazbeck’s solo exhibitions include Diplomatic Entanglements, Rochester Art Center, US (2015) and A little bit of heaven, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, US (2008). His work has also been exhibited at The Met Breuer, New York (2018); Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University, US (2018); Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017); CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, France (2017); 16th Quadriennale di Arte, Rome (2016) and 12th Bienal de Cuenca, Ecuador (2014), among others. His work can be found in the collections of the Tate, London; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; El Museo del Barrio, New York; Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, US and Museu de Arte Moderno de São Paulo.

His work has appeared in publications such as Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2018); Dissonant Archives (I.B. Tauris-Ibraaz, 2015); New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America (Museum of Arts and Design, 2014); American Art. Smithsonian American Art Museum (The University of Chicago Press, 2012) and ArtMargins, Vol. 1 (MIT Press, 2012).

He has been recognised for his work by the Studio Lease Program Berlin, Kulturwerk des BBK (2014); the Moving Image Award, Tate, London (2012) and a commission from the Latin American and Latino Art Forum, DRCLAS, Harvard University (2006).

He holds a licentiate degree in fine art from IUESAPAR, Caracas (2001). Born in 1972 in Caracas, he currently lives and works in Berlin.
