Biography
Kemi Bassene is a photographer, musicologist and cultural critic who explores fragments of African cultures to identify intersections with cultures outside Africa and ways Africans are viewed internationally. His work also questions readings of harmony and melody in relation to the heavily rhythmic character of African music and investigates relationships between philosophical thoughts and music.
Bassene’s work Nine was shown in a solo exhibition at Clark House, Mumbai (2013). Group exhibitions of his work include Groupe Mobile, Bétonsalon, France (2016) and Body Luggage. Migration of Gestures, Kunsthaus Graz am Universalmuseum Joanneum, Austria (2016). He is a founding member of Afrikadaa art and editorial collective.
Bassene started learning photography at the age of seven with his grandfather Mama Casset, the first photographer to open a studio in French Western Africa in 1946.
