Biography

Chiara Cartuccia is an independent curator, writer, art historian and researcher whose work focuses on the practice and theory of performativity in contemporary arts, and the potentialities of performance as a generative epistemological tool.

She has curated numerous programmes, performances and exhibitions, including the group show and discursive programme, Good Mirrors are Not Cheap, Goethe-Institut Bulgarien, Sofia (2019) and Under a Different Sun, Palazzo Mora, Venice (2016), an exhibition and performance programme co-curated with Celeste Ricci. For Manifesta 12, she co-curated the Planetary Garden Public Programme (2018), a composite series of discursive, performative, participatory events exploring topics as broad as borderlessness, socio-political accountability of networks and interspecies coexistence, from the specific vantage point offered by the city of Palermo.

Cartuccia has published numerous essays online and in print journals, magazines and books, including Acque Ferme. Some Irreducible Fragments and One, Univocal Perspective (Let Us Say this Again, Opaquely, 2017); Nathalie Mba Bikoro: Nothing is Lost to History (Africanah.org, March 2017); Artistic Responses to History Problems (Doppiozero, January 2017); and Sidsel Meineche Hansen: SECOND SEX WAR (this is tomorrow, May 2016).

In 2015, she co-founded the curatorial platform EX NUNC. She has previously held curatorial positions at SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin (2013-2016) and Manifesta Biennial, Palermo/Amsterdam (2017–2018).

Cartuccia holds a BA in Art History from Sapienza University, Rome (2007) and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths College, London (2012). She is currently a PhD candidate at Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam.

Born in 1984 in Rome, Cartuccia currently lives and works in London.
