Biography

Mariana Castillo Deball explores the ideologically constructed conditions under which artefacts appear in today’s culture as well as the role these objects play in the construction of identity, culture and history. Through research and collaboration across disciplines such as archaeology and science, she takes a kaleidoscopic approach to art practice, creating works in a range of mediums that arise from the collision and recombination of these different languages, systems of order and classifications.

Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Art Institute (2016); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Mexico (2015); Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2014); CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (2013); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2013); Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City (2011) and Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, US (2010). Group exhibitions include Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); 23rd São Paulo Biennial (2016); Liverpool Biennial (2016); 8th Berlin Biennale (2014); dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany (2012) and 54th Venice Biennale (2011).

Castillo Deball participated in a Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst residency in Berlin (2011). She earned a master’s degree in fine art from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City (1997) and a second master’s degree in philosophy from the Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México, Mexico City (1999). She also pursued a postgraduate programme at the Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, the Netherlands (2002-2003).

Born in Mexico City in 1975, Castillo Deball currently lives and works between Berlin and Mexico City.
