Biography
Antoine Catala centres his works, ranging from ‘breathing’ installations to holograms and moving sculptures, around everyday communication tools and the ways humans consume media. He investigates the evolution of communication tools over time (what changes and what does not) as well as the effect of this evolution on human habits (or vice versa), communication and miscommunication.
Catala’s work has been featured in a number of solo exhibitions, including Packaging or Envelopes. All Feelings Disintegrate Up Close, Praz-Delavallade, Los Angeles (2019–2020); Everything is Okay: Season 2, Marlborough Contemporary, London (2018); Everything is Okay, 47 Canal, New York (2017); Theory of Mind, Galerie Christine Mayer, Munich (2017); Jardin Synthétique à l'Isolement, Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon, France (2015); Distant Feel, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, US (2015); New Feelings, 47 Canal, New York (2014); Heavy Words, Peephole, Milan (2014); and Image Families, Unge Kunstneres Samfund, Oslo (2013). His work is part of the permanent collection at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, US; Centre Pompidou, Paris; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France; Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
Catala has participated in residencies at the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, US (2008), and Art & Idea, Mexico City (2005). He pursued studies for a BA in Sonic Arts and earned a BA in Fine Arts from the London Guildhall University and a Licence de Mathématiques Fondamentales from the Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse.
Born in 1975 in Toulouse, he lives and works in New York.
