Biography
Tony Chakar is an architect, artist and writer whose work incorporates literature, philosophy and theory. He comes from a generation of artists and thinkers in Lebanon whose primeval subjects are war and the post-war, which they view with a critical eye in order to get at the historical truth.
He writes widely for art journals and architecture magazines while also teaching the history of art and architecture at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux arts (ALBA) in Lebanon.
Chakar’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including Viral Self-Portraits, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2020); Wednesday Society: The Couch of Meret O, Istanbul Biennial (2019); As in a Beginning, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands (2018); On Becoming Two, Beirut Art Center (2017); and Antiphotojournalism, Foam Museum, Amsterdam, (2011).
His publications include Down with the World (e-flux: Superhumanity, a project by e-flux Architecture at the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, 2016); To Speak Shadow (Afterall: A Journal of Art, Context and Enquiry, University of Chicago Press, 2014|); and On seeking incuriously (Erick Beltrán, Nuria Enguita, Charles Esche (eds), How (…) things that don’t exist, exhibition catalogue, 31st Bienal de São Paulo, 2014).
He holds a Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures en Architecture from The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (1994).
Chakar was born in 1968 in Beirut where he continues to live and work.
