Biography
Guillermo Cifuentes’ video work encompasses filming and editing for experimental and documentary films. His art practice also extends to installation work and stage design.
Cifuentes’ work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including Latente, Galería Metro Bellas Artes, Santiago (2004); Place of Recognition, Bliss Hall of Fame Gallery, New York (2003); Lugar Común, Bellas Artes Subway Station, Santiago (2001); Sensory Overload, Ford Gallery, Michigan (2001); and Correspondencia, Itaú Cultural, Sao Paulo (1998).
Among his group exhibitions are 11th Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement, Geneva (2005); VIPER International Video Art Festival, Basel (2001); Locarno Video Art Festival (2001); Bienal Internacional de Arte de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires (2000); Ayloul Festival, Beirut, (1999); 12th International Festival of Electronic Art Videobrasil, Sao Paulo (1998); and Festival Internacional de La Habana (1995).
He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Rafael Sánchez Award, Best documentary edition, Festival Internacional de Documentales de Valparaíso (2004); Laser D'Or, Festival de Video Arte de Locarno (2001); Juan Downey Award, 3rd Bienal de Video y Artes Electrónicas de Santiago, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Universidad de Chile. Santiago (1997); Best Experimental Short Film and best art direction, 3rd Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes de Santiago (1995); Best short-film award, 1st Encuentro de Cortometrajes de Santiago, Centro de Extensión Universidad Católica(1993); Second Award, 1st Biennal de Video y Artes Electrónicas de Santiago, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Universidad de Chile (1993). He participated in a residency at Remsen Bird Fund, Occidental College, Los Ángeles (2004)
Cifuentes received a BA in Audiovisual Communication from the Institute of Art and Communication (ARCOS) Santiago (1991) and an MFA in Video Art from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University (1998).
Cifuentes was born in 1968 in Santiago, where he worked and lived until his death in 2007.
