Biography

Kawayan de Guia’s works offer ironic and sometimes comedic perceptions of sociopolitical issues in contemporary Philippine society and the colonial past. Working across painting, installation and sculpture, he often makes reference to or draws material from his hometown.

His work has been exhibited at the Manila Biennale (2018); Samstag Museum, Adelaide, Australia (2017); The National Art Center, Tokyo (2017); Bencab Museum, Baguio City, the Philippines (2015, 2017); Aichi Arts Center, Nagoya, Japan (2016); Asian Cultural Center, Gwangju (2016); Singapore Art Museum (2015); MO_Space, Makati, the Philippines (2015) and Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2015).

He has received numerous awards, including Ateneo Art Awards, Manila (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012) and the Signature Art Prize, Singapore Art Museum (2011). He has also completed residencies at the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia (2016); Visual Art Centre, La Trobe University, Bendigo, Australia (2012) and Art Omi International Center, Ghent, US (2009).

He was born in 1979 in Baguio City, the Philippines, where he continues to live and work.
