Biography
Architect and urbanist Manuel de Rivero is co-founder of 51-1 Arquitectos, an architecture studio based in Lima, Peru, and Supersudaca, an international collective for urban research. He is currently the Dean of the Architecture School of Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de America Latina (UCAL), Lima.
His architectural work has been widely published in major international architectural journals, where he regularly contributes essays about urban issues. He has spoken at several international architecture biennales and events and has a given a TED Talk on his research about Lima.
He has been the recipient of the Bienal de Buenos Aires Award for the Young Latin American Generation for research on social housing (2017); first prize in the international competition for the extension of the Medellin Museum of Modern Art, Colombia (2010); Best Entry Award, 2nd International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam for a study on the impact of massive tourism in the Caribbean (2005) and first prize in the 4th Iberoamerican Architecture Biennale for his research on Lima’s experimental housing project (PREVI) (2004). Since 2016, he has been a member of the Prince Claus Award Committee, Amsterdam.
He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture and urbanism from Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima (1995) and a master’s degree in architecture from the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam (2002). He was born in 1973 in Lima, where he continues to live and work.
