Biography
Encompassing video, print and large site-specific drawings, Rohini Devasher’s current body of work is a collection of ‘strange’ terrains, constructed by observing, recording, fictionalising and reimagining objects and spaces that exist at the interface between science, nature, culture, perception and production.
Devasher’s work has been shown in a number of solo exhibitions, including Hopeful Monsters, Project 88, Mumbai (2018); Speculations from the field, Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum (2016); Archaeologies of the Future, Vis-a-Vis Experience Centre, in collaboration with Project 88, New Delhi (2016) and Deep Time, Project 88, Mumbai (2013). Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2018); Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum (2018); Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, US (2016, 2018); 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art (2017); Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Noida, India (2016); Cinnamon Colomboscope Arts Festival, Colombo (2016); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2016) and Dhaka Art Summit (2016). Her work is part of the collections of Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence; British Council, London and United Bank of Switzerland, London.
Among her awards are Contemporary Artist of the Year, Forbes Art Awards, India (2013); Art India Breakthrough Artist Award, Skoda Prize (2012); Sarai Associate Fellowship, Center for the Study of Developing Socities, Delhi (2010) and Inlaks Fine Art Award, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, New Delhi (2008). She participated in residencies at The Owner’s Cabin (2018); Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence (2016); Khoj Studios, New Delhi (2015) and Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (2012).
She received a BFA in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi (2001) and an MFA in Printmaking from the Winchester School of Art, UK (2004).
Born in 1978 in New Delhi, she currently lives and works in Noida, India.
