Biography
On both formal and conceptual levels, artist and filmmaker Roy Dib challenges common notions of space and boundary, weaving together archival material, scripted text and hypothetical circumstances to chronicle the political narratives of our day.
Dib’s theatrical performance Close to Here (2017) and installation Here and There (2017) were presented at Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017). After its debut at Exposure 2015, Beirut Art Center (2015), his video installation A Spectacle of Privacy (2014) was included in the Images Festival, Toronto (2016); Queer Porto 1, International Queer Film Festival, Porto, Portugal (2015) and Forum Expanded, 65th Berlinale (2015). His video installation Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear (2012) was presented at the Delfina Foundation, London (2014); Ecrans Med, Montreal (2014) and 18th International Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, São Paulo (2013). His first video, Under a Rainbow (2011), was shown at Parallel Vienna (2013); Rotterdam International Film Festival (2013); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012) and Video Works, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2011).
Dib’s video installation A Spectacle of Privacy (2014) won the Vila Sul – Goethe Institut Residency Prize at the 20th International Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, São Paulo (2015). His short film Mondial 2010 (2014) also won several awards, including the Teddy Award for Best Short Film, 64th Berlinale (2014); Best Short Film, Queer Lisboa International Film Festival, Lisbon (2014) and the Uppsala Grand Prix, Uppsala International Short Film Festival, Sweden (2014).
Dib received his master’s degree in theater studies and performance art from the Institute of Fine Art, Lebanese University, Beirut (2014). He participated in the Home Workspace Program, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2011-2012).
Born in 1983 in Tripoli, Lebanon, Dib currently lives and works in Beirut.
