Stan Douglas

Biography

Stan Douglas often appropriates existing Hollywood genres and borrows from classic literary works to generate reimagined narratives. Using both analogue and digital technologies, he creates films, photographs and installations that examine local settings and past events.

Douglas’ work has been shown in international exhibitions at the Hasselblad Center, Gothenburg, Sweden (2016); Pérez Art Museum Miami (2016); Salzburger Kunstverein, Austria (2016); Wiels Centre d'Art Contemporain, Brussels (2015); Museu Coleçäo Berardo, Lisbon (2015); Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2014, 2015); Photobiennale 2013, Moscow (2013); Canadian Cultural Centre, Paris (2013); Minneapolis Institute of Arts, US (2012, 2013); The Power Plant, Toronto (2011); Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Württembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart (2007); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2005); kestnergesellschaft, Hanover, Germany (2004); Serpentine Gallery, London (2002) and Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (1987).

He has received the Hasselblad Award, Gothenburg, Sweden (2016); Scotiabank Photography Award, Toronto (2013); Infinity Award for Art from the International Center of Photography, New York (2012); Bell Award in Video Art, Ottawa (2008) and Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Award, Ottawa (2007).

Douglas has taught at the Graduate Art Department of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, US since 2009. He studied at the Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver.

Born in 1960 in Vancouver, Douglas currently lives and works in Vancouver and Los Angeles.
