Biography
Concepts such as ‘site-specificity’ and its many critical revisions inform Alberto Duman's work which explores the possibilities of discovering, revealing and debating social relations, paradoxes and dichotomies present in public life and its settings. For the 9th Sharjah Biennial he proposed Decoder (2009), a towering site-specific structure made from shopping trolleys which addressed the duality of consumption and construction in the modern urban context.
Unable to realise the project as originally planned, Decoder became instead a project room in the Sharjah Art Museum which demonstrated the creative process rather than the product, reflecting a defining conceptual feature of the 9th Biennial. Duman has presented projects and exhibitions throughout the UK in venues and public places including the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, University of Greenwich, London (2009), Chisenhale Art Place, London (2007), Cardiff, Wales (2006). His numerous projects in London include Guggenheim Walthamstow (2005) a hoax poster project at an empty site in East London.
Alberto Duman was born in Milan, Italy in 1966 and now lives and works in the UK. He graduated from Camberwell College of Art with an MA in Printmaking in 1996 and a PhD from the University of Wales before turning his focus to art in the public realm. He has received public art commissions, undertaken residencies across the UK and has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, Camberwell College of Art and Middlesex University, London.
