Eddie Chambers

Biography

Eddie Chambers is a Professor in the Department of Art and Art History, University of Texas at Austin (2016–ongoing), and an Affiliate of the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies. He is the holder of the David Bruton, Jr. Centennial Professorship in Art History. His research interests centre primarily on African American art and African Diaspora art history. He is editor-in-chief of the CAA Art Journal.

Chambers’ work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions, and his work is part of the collections of Tate Britain, Sheffield Museums and the Arts Council Collection, London.

Among his publications are World is Africa: Writings on Diaspora Art (Bloomsbury, 2021), Roots & Culture: Cultural Politics in the Making of Black Britain (Bloomsbury, 2017), Black Artists in British Art: A History since the 1950s (Bloomsbury, 2014) and Things Done Change: The Cultural Politics of Recent Black Artists in Britain (Brill, 2012), He also edited the Routledge Companion to African American Art History (2019), and his writing has appeared in Art Monthly, Race Today, Africa World Review, Circa, Creative Camera, Ten.8 and Greater London Arts Quarterly.

In 1989, Chambers established the African and Asian Visual Artists’ Archive (AAVAA), the first research and reference facility for documenting the work of Black visual artists in the UK.

He earned a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Sunderland Polytechnic (1983) and a PhD in Art History from Goldsmiths College, University of London (1998). Born in 1960 in Wolverhampton, UK, he lives and works in Austin and Edinburgh.
