Biography
Roza El Hassan’s work encompasses a wide range of mediums, from object art, drawing and sculpting to sustainable design and architectural projects. Examining interactions between human beings and physical space from social, political, psychological and environmental perspectives, El Hassan views her work as an instrument of development.
Solo presentations of her work have been presented at Kunst Raum Riehen, Basel (2016); Kunstmuseum Basel (2012); Műcsarnok Budapest (2006); Drawing Center, New York (2003) and Secession, Vienna (2000). Her work has also been shown in group exhibitions, including do it بالعربي, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2016); Sharjah Biennial 7 (2005); 48th Venice Biennale (1997); the first Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (1995) and 20th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (1989).
She holds a doctorate in social and ecological design and architecture from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest (2014) and a diploma from the Painting and Sculpting Department at the same university (1990). She also studied at the Städelschule, Frankfurt (1991). In addition to her work as an artist, she has taught at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (2003-2007) and ETH Zurich (2002-2003). She is also a curator and blogger.
El Hassan was born in 1966 in Budapest, where she currently lives and works.
