Sham Enbashi

Biography

Sham Enbashi’s photographic works question the relationship between objective and subjective reality. Upon observation and reflection of her surroundings, Enbashi restages her findings in order to challenge the relationship between a world that exists outside of her personal perception and her internal experience of it.
Incorporating her images with text from either her journals or literary work that influenced her photographs is an integral part of her creative process. Intersecting her work with personal events and exploring notions of consciousness and the nature of reality, she focuses on the ability of photography to be an observer of the human journey.

Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, including It Is Raining But I Do Not Believe It Is Raining, August Fifth, Gennep, the Netherlands (2020); Life out of Balance, Tashkeel, Dubai (2016) and Community & Critique: SEAF 2015/16 Cohort Show, Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi (2016) Her work is included in Khalid Alshafar Photography Collection, Foundry, Dubai.

She was a fellow at the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF) in Abu Dhabi in partnership with the Rhode Island School of Design (2016).

Enbashi founded August Fifth, an art gallery in Gennep, dedicated to support her practice and other emerging artists around the region.
She earned a BA in Architecture and Design from the American University of Sharjah (2012).
Born in 1988 in Sharjah, she currently lives and works in Amsterdam.
